APPLICATION NOTES
Setup and alignment of a MOPA system with a DFB TPA configuration

This application note deals with the setup and alignment of a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system. The master oscillator, also called seed laser, is a distributed feedback laser which is part of eagleyard's product family of DFB lasers. The power amplification is done by a tapered amplifier (TPA) which is also part of eagleyard's portfolio (tapered amplifiers).
The application note includes general recommendations for a MOPA setup and detailed instructions on how to align the TPA to the beam of the DFB laser.

Measurement and analysis of the linewidth

This application note deals with our measurement method and analysis of the linewidth of distributed feedback lasers (DFB laser). It is motivated by the fact that there are different methods to measure linewidth and several ways to interpret it, often leading to varying results. By describing our approach we like to make clear how we determine the linewidth.

Relative intensity noise (RIN)

Relative intensisity noise (RIN) describes optical power fluctuations of a laser which, in case of our distributed feedback laser (DFB laser), mainly stem from intrinsic optical phase and frequency fluctuations caused by spontaneous emission. However, the measured RIN value depends strongly on the current noise and the quality of the measurement setup, both which differ from lab to lab.
This application note provides information about our setup, our measurement method and the theoretical background that underlies our analysis.
